A Better You

Good morning world! I’m sitting on my patio drinking some coffee, I got a late start to my day, it’s about 10:45 am here in Los Angeles and I’m thinking about so many wonderful things I have to share at least one. Recently I listened to a podcast entitled “A Better You,” on TED Radio Hour. For anyone who doesn’t listen to podcast’s yet I highly recommend it, they give your mind a little dose of awesome while driving in the car and you don’t have to waste your brain power on radio nonsense. So, this particular podcast talked with a few inspiring people on how they changed their lives for the better. Whether it was at 25, 37 or 60, each individual had a story about how one day they woke up and decided they wanted their lives to be different. Not only that, but they DID something about it. Well isn’t that what I’m always talking about ?! Like, yea … we all THINK we want to change our lives in some way but how often do people actually take literal ACTION to make these grandiose things happen for themselves? Well, slowly but surely I’m learning that a lot of people are actually making these changes, and it’s not as big and scary as it seems and….

I’m getting ahead of myself, more on that another time…

So, one man in particular named Matt Cutts suggested an idea that I fell in love with immediately. He talked about how for 30 days every month, he sets his mind on one new goal. He picks his thing, whatever it may be, and he tries it every day for 30 days. Easy. The things he love stick, and the things he doesn’t enjoy so much become torture and after 30 days he is so relieved to have them finished. Lol. As he is still mid sentence about this idea I jumped from my couch and ran to my journal to try one that he suggested. “Write down 3 things everyday. One: Something I like about myself. Two: Something I like about the world. Three: Something I like about another person.” “I can do that,” I thought to myself. So I did. And I have been for the last 5 days. And I’m really enjoying it because as the days go on I have new things to be happy about and thankful for and I am taking a moment out of my day to be grateful amidst the hustle and bustle of getting by. And this concept was so wonderful to me because there are SO many things I want to try. Playing guitar, surfing, rock climbing, running long distances, meditating, poetry …. the list goes on and on and at some point I get overwhelmed and I end up doing none of them. Or I end up doing them for a few days and then stopping because I’m trying to surf and play guitar and rock climb all on a Monday and I get really tired and decide to take a nap instead. It also made me realize that any choice we want to make can seem unattainable when we look so far in advance to try and see the outcome, that the goal becomes a little speck far off in the unknown and it’s too scary to approach. I have so many ideas and goals like this in my head, but I’m slowly starting to bring them a little closer, think of them in terms of day by day, and they’re becoming a little less scary.

Again … more on that later.

So this has been exciting for me and I wanted to share it with you because I think setting one new goal a month and sticking to it is attainable and adds a little enrichment to our lives. Trying things we may otherwise have said we don’t have time for can seem a bit more manageable when we only have to do it for 30 days. Who knows … we may end up with a handful of new hobbies we couldn’t imagine living without. So I have set two for myself for the month of July, because for some reason I always have to be extra. I will be meditating daily and writing 3 things in my journal that I’m grateful for about myself, the world, and another person. I will update on how these small changes are bettering my life, and I encourage you to try this exercise with Brian and I as well! I would love to hear what you decide to attempt because I may want to try it out myself hehe. Thanks for reading and happy trails to becoming A Better You xx

  1. In all of the great “pro’s” of generations, a voice emerges. A quiet voice with suttle poignant comment.
